The UK is moving towards a fully digital immigration system, and a key part of this transformation is the eVisa, a secure online record of your immigration status. If you currently hold a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) or Biometric Residence Card (BRC), you must take action before 1 June 2026.

What Is Changing?

From 1 June 2026, BRPs and BRCs will no longer be valid. You will not be able to use your physical card to:

  • Prove your right to work
  • Rent a home in the UK
  • Access benefits or services
  • Enter or re-enter the UK

Instead, all immigration status checks will be done digitally through your eVisa account, managed via the Home Office’s UKVI account system.

What Is An eVisa?

An eVisa is an online proof of your immigration status. It shows details such as:

  • Your immigration status and conditions
  • The length of your permission to stay
  • Your right to work or study
  • Your right to rent in the UK

You can share your status with employers, landlords, or other organisations by generating a share code through your UKVI account.

Why You Must Act Now

If you do not set up your eVisa account:

  • You will not be able to prove your right to live, work or rent in the UK.
  • You may be denied boarding at the airport when travelling back to the UK.
  • Employers or landlords may refuse you based on lack of proof.
  • You could face issues accessing services you are entitled to.

This can all be easily avoided by setting up your UKVI account as soon as possible.

How To Set Up Your eVisa Account

Setting up your eVisa account is completely free and typically takes no more than 30 minutes. You will need:

  • Your BRP or BRC
  • Access to your passport (if required)
  • A smartphone with the UK Immigration: ID Check app
The Process Involves:
  1. Scanning your BRP and/or passport
  2. Taking a photo using your phone
  3. Answering a few security questions
