Marriage can be a beautiful thing, but it requires a lot of hard work and effort from both parties to make it work. In the modern world “Until death do us part” is no longer the guiding mantra for anyone who is unhappy in their marriage, with the UK divorce rate currently at around 42%.
A divorce can happen for all kinds of reasons, including some that you would find hard to believe. Here we look at some of the unexpected and funnier examples to show that sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction.
Voting for the wrong person
Donald Trump is a truly divisive character who has just as many fans as he does haters, but it appears he can also be the reason for a divorce. This happened after 22 years of marriage, when Gayle McCormick left her husband after she found out he planned to vote for Trump. It seems that some divides are just too wide to bridge.
Dirty dishes
Everyone has bad habits that can annoy others but there are cases where it all becomes too much for the other party. One man revealed that his wife divorced him because he left dishes in the sink, which wasn’t a big deal to him – but as he found out when the divorce papers were filed – it was a pretty big deal for her.
Runny makeup
Beauty standards are ridiculously high for women, and it doesn’t help when a husband sets the bar to an unreachable level. This is what apparently happened in the UAE, when a newlywed wife was accused of “deceiving” her husband by “using so many cosmetics and fake eyelashes” that they washed off at the beach. Something tells us she will be much happier alone anyway.
Not a fan of Disney films
Disney’s Frozen film was universally loved, although it didn’t hit the spot for everyone. According to a news report, not being a fan of Queen Anna and her friends was enough to separate a Japanese couple, with the wife telling her husband there was something wrong with him as a human being when he said he wasn’t a fan. We wonder if he thought Frozen 2 was any better.
Loose lips
Most couples feel comfortable to share a few secrets over some pillow talk but maybe there should be some limits? One woman filed for divorce after she found out her husband couldn’t stop sharing their family affairs with his relatives and friends. It seems like she unwittingly married his family too, which was never going to end well.
The other side of divorce
Of course, while we’ve highlighted some of the more light-hearted reasons for divorce, the vast majority of cases separating from a partner can be a stressful and painful experience, especially if children are involved.
Ultimately, divorce is no laughing matter, and it is vitally important that if you are filing for divorce or have received notice of your partner’s divorce application, you should seek independent legal advice to ensure your best interests are taken care of.
