Injured by a Weight-Loss Jab? Ozempic, Mounjaro & Fake Injection Claims in the UK

Written by Annabelle Bhurton, Associate Solicitor · SRA-regulated · Last reviewed 14 October 2026

Short answer: In the UK, you may be able to claim compensation if a weight-loss injection harmed you because someone was careless: an online clinic that prescribed without proper checks, a pharmacy that supplied a falsified pen, or a salon or seller that injected you with an unlicensed product. The Ozempic lawsuits in the news are American. There is currently no UK group action against the manufacturers, so UK claims are brought individually against whoever was responsible for your care or supply.

Weight-loss injections such as Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) have transformed obesity treatment, and are now used by large numbers of patients in the UK. Demand has also created a large black market, a rush of online prescribing services, and a rise in people being harmed leading to clinical negligence claims. This guide explains when harm from a weight-loss jab gives rise to a legal claim, and when it does not.

Is There a UK Ozempic Lawsuit?

Not at present. The litigation reported in the media is taking place in the United States, where  thousands of claimants have brought product liability claims alleging that semaglutide and related medicines caused injuries including  stomach paralysis (gastroparesis), bowel obstruction and a rare type of sight loss called NAION (non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy). Those cases have not been decided or settled.

At the time of writing, we are not aware of any court-approved UK group litigation concerning semaglutide or tirzepatide products. Most UK claims relating to weight-loss injections continue to be pursued on an individual basis. Be cautious of adverts suggesting otherwise. If your injury was caused by poor prescribing, poor monitoring or a fake product, you do not need a group action: you can bring an individual claim now.

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, while tirzepatide is the active ingredient in Mounjaro. Searches for “Ozempic lawsuit UK”, “Wegovy compensation claim” and “Mounjaro claim UK” generally relate to the same legal issues discussed in this guide.

When Can I Claim for Harm From a Weight-Loss Injection?

Every medicine has side effects, and suffering a known side effect is not, on its own, grounds for a claim. You may have a claim if one of the following applies.

1. You were prescribed it without proper checks

Weight-loss injections are prescription-only medicines. A prescriber, whether your GP, a private clinic or an online pharmacy, must assess whether the medicine is safe for you before prescribing. That includes checking your weight and BMI, your medical history (for example any history of pancreatitis or certain thyroid conditions), other medicines you take and whether you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

The pharmacy regulator, the General Pharmaceutical Council expects online prescribing services supplying weight-management medicines to have approved safeguards in place, including independent verification or information such as a patient’s weight, height or BMI where necessary for safe prescribing.  Prescribers must independently verify the information patients give, rather than relying on a questionnaire alone. A prescriber who skipped those checks, or who prescribed when the medicine was clearly unsuitable, may have been negligent.

2. You were not warned about the risks

You are entitled to be told about the material risks of a treatment and the alternatives, so you can make an informed decision. A prescriber is generally required to take reasonable care to ensure that a patient is aware of material risks and reasonable alternative treatments. If a material risk was not properly discussed and that failure caused you to undergo treatment that you otherwise would have declined or delayed, you may have a claim.

3. Your treatment was not monitored

Doses are usually increased gradually. Prescribers should review how you are coping and act on warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or signs of dehydration. Failing to respond to those signs can be negligent.

4. You were supplied a fake or unlicensed product

This is where the most serious injuries are happening. Counterfeit pens sold through social media, beauty salons and unregulated websites have been found to contain the wrong drug, the wrong dose or no active ingredient at all. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Agency reported that some UK-seized fakes contained insulin rather than semaglutide, which can cause dangerously low blood sugar in people without diabetes (hypoglycaemia), hospitalisation and in some cases, coma. In 2025, a woman died after being injected at a beauty salon with a product she was told was Mounjaro, and the UK medicines regulator dismantled a factory producing fake weight-loss pens linked to Alluvi Healthcare and Wholesale Supplements Ltd and seized more than 2,000 unlicenced retatrutide pens valued at over £250,000, which are not currently approved for commercial or clinical use by any regulatory agency.

The regulator has also warned about a falsified Mounjaro pen supplied through a registered online pharmacy, showing that the risk is not limited to the black market.

If you were supplied a fake product, you may be able to claim against the seller, salon or pharmacy that supplied it. Depending on the circumstances, claims may arise in negligence  under the Consumer Protection Act 1987, and under consumer protection legislation relating to the supply of goods and services.

What Injuries Do Weight-Loss Injection Claims Involve?

The following circumstances may indicate that a claim should be investigated:

  • Severe hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar) from insulin-contaminated fakes
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Gallbladder disease requiring surgery
  • Severe dehydration and acute kidney injury
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Infections and abscesses from unsterile products or poor injection technique
  • Serious allergic reactions
  • Visual disturbance, including in some cases non-arteritic ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION)

Who Can I Claim Against?

Situation Likely defendant
Prescribed without proper checks or monitoring The prescriber or clinic, through its professional indemnity insurance
Online pharmacy supplied a falsified pen The pharmacy
Injected at a salon or by an unqualified practitioner The salon or practitioner, through their insurance
Bought a fake pen online or on social media The seller, if they can be traced; we will advise on other routes if they cannot
NHS prescribing error The NHS trust or GP practice

What Evidence Do I Need?

  1. Your prescription, consultation records and any questionnaire you completed
  2. Order confirmations, receipts and messages with the seller or clinic
  3. The pen and its packaging, if you still have them (do not throw them away)
  4. Your hospital and GP records
  5. Photographs of any injection-site injury
  6. A record of your symptoms and when they started

You should also report suspected side effects or fake products to the MHRA through the Yellow Card scheme.

How Long Do I Have to Claim?

You normally have three years from the date of your injury, or from the date you first knew it may have been caused by the injection. For claims about a defective product there is also an absolute 10-year limit from when the product was put into circulation. If someone has died, their family generally has three years from the date of death.

Frequently Asked Questions / Questions & Answers

Can I claim if I bought the injection without a prescription? Yes, potentially. Buying from an unlicensed seller does not stop you claiming against a seller, salon or pharmacy that supplied a dangerous product. Your compensation could be reduced if the court finds you were partly responsible.

I had bad side effects from genuine Ozempic. Can I claim? Usually, only where there is evidence that a healthcare provider breached their duty of care or, less commonly, where there is a viable claim concerning a defective medicinal product. Simply experiencing a recognised side effect will not usually be enough. However, if the product should not have been prescribed to you, you were not warned of the risks, or your symptoms were not acted on, you may have a feasible claim. We can review your records and tell you.

Is there a no win no fee option? Most claims of this kind can be funded on a no win, no fee basis. We will explain the terms before you commit.

Can I join the US Ozempic lawsuit? Generally not, if you were prescribed and treated in the UK. UK claims are brought in the UK courts.

DISCLAIMER

GLP-1 medicines are generally considered safe and effective for most patients when prescribed appropriately. Many recognised side effects including nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal upset, can occur despite entirely appropriate prescribing and do not necessarily indicate negligence or entitlement to compensation. A legal claim will usually require evidence of negligence, a breach of professional duty, a defective product, or another legally actionable failure. We assess each case individually and will advise frankly where the available evidence does not support legal proceedings.
